Haller Park, formerly known as Bamburi Nature Trail, was the man-made sanctuary to receive the United Nations Environmental Program Global 500 Roll of Honor Award and today this small preserve in the north coast of Mombasa is a model for other reclamation projects. What was once limestone quarries is now a thriving ecosystem of forest, grasslands and ponds with walking trails for you to view the fenced wildlife, such as hippo, giraffe, antelope, buffalo and smaller mammals, as well as bird species, such as eagle, sandpiper, weaver, stork, kingfisher, ibis, owl, heron, egret and many others.
The sections of the park include the game sanctuary, reptile park, fish farm, crocodile pens, giraffe viewing area and palm gardens. Do not arrive here to expect a safari experience. It is more of a zoo-like experience but based on rehabilitated land in Africa! While at Haller Park, make sure you meet Owen and Mzee, an unlikely couple with a touching story. Owen is an orphaned hippo who lost his family after the El Nino floods washed he and his family out into the Indian Ocean.
The adults were able to make it back to shore, but Owen was too small to swim to the beach and he was stranded in the water for days until the Kenya Wildlife Service was able to rescue. After he was retrieved from the ocean, he was placed in a fenced area with other animals, but no other hippos were in sight. To everyone’s amazement, an adult male tortoise named Mzee took Owen in and cared for him like a mother.

Mamba Village Tour
Mamba Village, East Africa’s largest crocodile farm, is a “must see” during your exploratory beach vacation in Mombasa if you have not seen any crocodiles on safari. Each section of the estate offers a unique experience, and the most popular is the crocodile farm where these aquatic reptiles are displayed.
Your tour of the farm begins with a video presentation that introduces you to many reptile species and the valuable roles they play in the ecosystems of the world and the fascinating facts, such as the longevity of the species on earth, bite force and average life span, will give you a greater appreciation for these prehistoric animals.
While touring the crocodile farm, your guide will enlighten you about the crocodile life cycle and behavior while you view live crocodiles of every size, from hatchlings to fully-grown adults. Some crocodile displays are labeled with a description of age, length and weight, and one of the most predictable events at the farm is the daily crocodile feeding where the giants fight for fresh meat.
While the crocodile farm is the most popular area of the village, our guests may also enjoy horseback riding on its small estate and beginners can even take lessons, or you may prefer the more outlandish camel riding. Should you have time, take a leisurely walk through the botanical gardens before enjoying a meal at the village restaurant that features a range of game meats, such as crocodile, zebra, ostrich and many other choices.
Tamarind Dinner Dhow Experience

Dinner Dhow Highlights
- The Tamarind Cruise.
- Sea food dinner.

Tamarind Dhow Experience Tour
Traditionally used for trade on the Indian Ocean, the Arab dhow has been a long-standing presence on the East African coastal waters, and now you can enjoy an evening of sailing, dining and romantically dancing along the coastline aboard one of these historic sailing vessels. Built in 1977, the Nawalilkher, an authentic Swahili dhow, is the largest of its type on the Mombasa coast, measuring more than 75 feet long.
Your evening cruise begins at the Tamarind Pier, where you board this magnificent wooden boat, and you feel as if you are stepping back in time. A kind waiter in traditional garb greets you warmly and escorts you to a private table where you sip on a house cocktail made with vodka, lime, honey, sugar and crushed ice, or if you prefer, you may also order your favorite non-alcoholic beverage or the cocktail without the alcohol.
As the dhow leaves the pier at around sunset, the setting could not be more delightful. The dhow sails around Tudor Creek where you enjoy breathtaking views of Old Town and Fort Jesus before arriving at a sheltered bay where the feast begins with an initiation of a live band playing. A four-course meal of mouth-watering edible delights is served, such as grilled lobster, fish, steak and much more.
When your belly is full, the waiter brings you a delicious cup of Arabica coffee or tea, or you may also request your favorite cocktail and then dance with your partner or relax while the dhow sails back to the pier. Awaiting there will be your transfer representative who will drive you back to your beach hotel.
