MOUNTAIN CLIMBING IN KENYA

If you are an avid mountain climber or a trekking enthusiast, you are welcome to explore the mountains in Kenya. These mountains include Mount Kenya, Mount Longonot, Mount Elgon and many hills that you can take your backpack, put on your hiking shoes and rain coat and put your courage on and climb one mountain. Experience snow-capped mountains with varying vegetation depending on the altitude. The flora and fauna of Mount Kenya are diverse, due to the variation in altitude, rainfall, aspect and temperature. The base of the mountains are moist and fertile due to past volcanic activity.

Group trekking adventures are encouraged for mountaineering teams. Fulfil your dreams. Fight the cold and the wetness, sleep in camps like Sirimon and Mackiner. Caves are also there along Naromoru and Chogoria mountaineering routes.

Mount Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second-highest in Africa, after Kilimanjaro. The highest peaks of the mountain are Batian [5,199 metres or 17,057 feet], Nelion [5,188 m or 17,021 ft and Point Lenana [4,985 m or 16,355 ft].

Mount Kenya is located in the former Eastern and Central provinces of Kenya. Mount Kenya is the source of the name of the Republic of Kenya. The forested slopes are an important source of water for much of Kenya.

6 Days Mount Kenya Hiking Naromoru - Chogoria Route Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi – Naromoru Town

Depart Nairobi early morning and begin the journey to Naromoru town accompanied by our friendly and knowledgeable mountain guide. Check inn at a hotel in town for lunch. In the afternoon you will take a walk to the Mau Mau caves for acclimitazion. Diner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 2: Naromoru Town– Met Station

After breakfast you will be met the mountain and his team of porters and cook. Proceed to main park gate 2,440m. After the park formalities, you will start the hike the mountain through the rain forest for nine kilometers to the Met Station 3050m; lunch en route. Diner and overnight at met station.

Day 3: Met Station – Mackinders Camp

After breakfast, depart with your packed lunch and start the day’s hike through the heather and the moorland zones to Mackinders camp 4300m. Diner and overnight at Mackinders camp.

Day 4: Mackinders Camp – Austrian Hut

After breakfast depart the hut at latest 10:00 A.M. Ascend along a steep screw to Austrian Hut taking about three hours arriving in time for lunch. In the afternoon relax in readiness for the summit attempt the following day. Diner and overnight at Austrian hut.

Day 5: Austrian Hut – Point Lenana – Chogoria Bandas

This will be the longest day of the trek. Take an early morning tea and at around 4.30 am and start climbing through Lewis Glacier to point Lenana 4,985m at 6:30am. Point lenana is the third peak. After the sunrise, descend down to Austrian hut and further down Mintos hut where you will have breakfast. Proceed further down along the famous Gorges Valley to Chogoria Bandas; lunch en route arriving in the afternoon for much needed rest, dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Chogoria Bandas – Chogoria Town – Nairobi

After breakfast, depart the bandas at 8.00 am and descend for two hours. Our 4×4 jeep will transfer climbers off the mountain to chogoria town. Drop off the porters and cook. You will be driven back to Nairobi; lunch en route arriving late afternoon. Drop off at your hotel where your expedition ends.
