Mount Kenya Hike Overview

Mount Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second-highest in Africa, after Kilimanjaro. The highest peaks of the mountain are Batian [5,199 metres or 17,057 feet], Nelion [5,188 m or 17,021 ft and Point Lenana [4,985 m or 16,355 ft].

Mount Kenya is located in the former Eastern and Central provinces of Kenya. Mount Kenya is the source of the name of the Republic of Kenya. The forested slopes are an important source of water for much of Kenya.

5 Days Mount Kenya Hiking Chogoria - Sirimon Route Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi – Mount Kenya Bandas

Depart Nairobi early morning and begin the journey to Chogoria village via Embu town accompanied by our friendly and knowledgeable mountain guide; arriving in time for lunch. You will be transferred to the park and begin a 9 km acclimatization hike through the forest accompanied by your guide, cook and porters. Upon clearing with the park formalities proceed to the Meru Mt. Kenya Bandas for Shower, dinner and overnight 2950m. (3-4 hrs walk).

Day 2: Mount Kenya Bandas – Lake Elis Camp

After breakfast, depart the bandas and begin the day’s trek. The hike will lead you up the heather zone with the views of the Ithanguni, Mugi hills and other features as well as looking for the high attitude flowers, animals and birds arriving Lake Ellis camp 3,450m. in time for lunch. Spend the rest of the day walking around and if you bring with you a fishing line you can try trout fishing in the lake. Diner and overnight at the camp.

Day 3: Lake Elis Camp – Mintos Camp

After breakfast, break the camp and start ascending up through the heather zone rich in high attitude flowers, animals like Hyrax and some species of birds available on the way and also you will have the views of the the Ithanguni, Mugi hills, valleys and other features as well as the main peaks; lunch enroute arriving Mintos camp 4200m. for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Mintos Camp – Point Lenana – Shipton Camp

This will be the longest day of the trek. Take an early morning tea and at around 3.00 am and start climbing along a lose scree; sometimes it is covered with snow. You will pass the first and the second junction on to Shipton at the Simba 4,600, and Haris 4,750m. respectively. You will reach the summit of Lenana 4,985m at 6:30am, taking about 3hrs. Point lenana is the third peak. After the sunrise, descend down taking two hours to Shipton camp for breakfast and much needed rest. Diner and overnight at the camp.

Day 5: Shipton Camp – Nanyuki – Nairobi

After breakfast, depart the camp and descend for five hours to Old Moses camp where you will connect a transfer car off the mountain through the Sirimon gate to Nanyuki town. Drop off the porters and cook. You will be driven back to Nairobi; lunch en route arriving late afternoon. Drop off at your hotel where your expedition ends.
