Mount Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second-highest in Africa, after Kilimanjaro. The highest peaks of the mountain are Batian [5,199 metres or 17,057 feet], Nelion [5,188 m or 17,021 ft and Point Lenana [4,985 m or 16,355 ft].

Mount Kenya is located in the former Eastern and Central provinces of Kenya. Mount Kenya is the source of the name of the Republic of Kenya. The forested slopes are an important source of water for much of Kenya.

7 Days Mt Kenya Technical Hiking North Face Route Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi – Nanyuki Town – Old Moses Camp

Depart Nairobi early morning and begin the journey to Nanyuki town accompanied by our friendly and knowledgeable mountain guide. You will have a brief stopover at the Equator before proceeding to town where you will pick the cook, porters and also food supplies. Proceed to Sirimon park gate 2,650m. After a picnic lunch and clearing with the park formalities, you will start the hike through the forest accompanied by your guides, cook and porters to Old Moses camp 3,300m. [3-4 hrs walk] arriving the camp early evening. Diner and overnight at Old Moses camp.

Day 2: Old Moses Camp – Shipton Camp

After breakfast, depart the camp with your packed lunch and start the day’s hike through the moorland viewing high attitude flowers, animals and birds to Shipton camp 4,200m. [ 6-7hs]. Diner and overnight at Shipton camp.

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Shipton Camp

Spend the day for acclimatization; walk on the Northern face of the peaks up to Hauseburg Col. 4,600m. for acclimatization and viewing the lakes and then return to Shipton camp for lunch, dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Shipton Camp – Point Lenana – Shipton Camp

This is the second acclimatization day. Take an early morning tea and at around 3.00 am and start climbing along a lose scree; sometimes it is covered with snow. You will reach the summit of Lenana 4,985m at 6:30am, taking about 3hrs. Point lenana is the third peak. After the sunrise, descend down taking two hours to Shipton camp to relax for the rest of the day and prepare for the final climb to the highest peak of Mount Kenya and the second highest point in Africa.

Day 5: Shipton Camp – Batian Peak – Shipton Camp

Depart camp at 5:00am and begin walking up a steep stony scree to arrive at the base of Batian. After preparation, start the technical climb at around 6:00 am, taking about 9 hrs to the top of Mount Kenya Summit the Batian Peak 5,199m. After a successful climb to the top, climb down the same route back to the Shipton hut for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 6: Shipton Camp – Mount Kenya Bandas

After breakfast depart camp early morning. climbing up a loose scree which sometimes might be covered with snow to reach the Simba Col. 4,650m. You will traverse to the Eastern side of the mountain and then descend to Mintos campsite 4,200m along the Chogoria trail; visit the scenic cliff above the Gorge’s Valley. Continue with the descent following the top of the Gorge to road head campsite for lunch and later proceed to Mt Kenya Bandas 2,950m. for hot shower, dinner and overnight .

Day 7: Chogoria Bandas – Chogoria Town – Nairobi

After breakfast, depart the bandas at 8.00 am and descend for two hours. Our 4×4 jeep will transfer climbers off the mountain to chogoria town. Drop off the porters and cook. You will be driven back to Nairobi; lunch en route arriving late afternoon. Drop off at your hotel where your expedition ends.
