Mount Kenya Trek Overview

Mount Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second-highest in Africa, after Kilimanjaro. The highest peaks of the mountain are Batian [5,199 metres or 17,057 feet], Nelion [5,188 m or 17,021 ft and Point Lenana [4,985 m or 16,355 ft].

Mount Kenya is located in the former Eastern and Central provinces of Kenya. Mount Kenya is the source of the name of the Republic of Kenya. The forested slopes are an important source of water for much of Kenya.

6 Days Mount Kenya Climbing Burguret - Sirimon Route Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi – Naromoru Town – Giant Bamboo Camp

Depart Nairobi early morning and begin the journey to Naromoru town accompanied by our friendly and knowledgeable mountain guide. Pick up the rest of the team of porters and the cook and proceed to Gathiuru Forest Station (2000 m). After a picnic lunch, begin the trek up through magnificent montane and bamboo forest arriving Giant Bamboo camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Giant Bamboo Camp – Highland Castle Camp

After breakfast, depart with your packed lunch and start the day’s hike. Trek through the bamboo zone, Podocarpus and Pencil Cedar forest. As we climb higher we will pass through the hypericum and hygenia zone also known as the rosewood zone before reaching the high altitude moorland with spectacular views to a lava cliff. Lunch en route arriving highland castle camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Highland Castle Camp – Teleki Valley Campsite

After breakfast, ascend in the moorland toward the main peaks towering to the east on to two turn lake. The trail has strange giant groundsel and lobelia. We will descend to Teleki valley below the towering peaks and glaciers. The valley has resident populations of bizarre rock hyrax and beautiful sun birds. Diner and overnight taleki valley campsite.

Day 4: Teleki Valley Campsite – Shipton Camp

After breakfast depart camp; our trail climbs up switchbacks winding along a beautiful series of rock ledges to Two turn lake, Nanyuki and Emarland Tarns before ascending to the crest of a ridge known as Arthur’s seat. We will descend into the Hausberg valley and rest at the Oblong and Hausberg tarns. Descend Eastward past Kami camp below the north face of Batian to Shipton camp 4,200 m. for lunch dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Shipton Camp – Point Lenana – Old Moses Camp

This will be the longest day of the trek. Take an early morning tea and at around 3.00 am and start climbing along a lose scree; sometimes it is covered with snow. You will reach the summit of Lenana 4,985m at 6:30am, taking about 3hrs. Point lenana is the third peak. After the sunrise, descend down taking two hours to Shipton camp for breakfast and further down to Old Moses camp taking four hours for dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Old Moses Camp – Nanyuki Town – Nairobi

After breakfast, depart the camp at 8.00 am and descend for two hours to Sirimon gate where you will connect a transfer car off the mountain to Nanyuki. Drop off the porters and cook. You will be driven back to Nairobi; lunch en route arriving late afternoon. Drop off at your hotel where your expedition ends.
