Mount Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second-highest in Africa, after Kilimanjaro. The highest peaks of the mountain are Batian [5,199 metres or 17,057 feet], Nelion [5,188 m or 17,021 ft and Point Lenana [4,985 m or 16,355 ft].

Mount Kenya is located in the former Eastern and Central provinces of Kenya. Mount Kenya is the source of the name of the Republic of Kenya. The forested slopes are an important source of water for much of Kenya.

7 Days Mount Kenya Hiking Timau - Chogoria Route Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi – Nanyuki Town

Depart Nairobi early morning and begin the journey to Nanyuki town accompanied by our friendly and knowledgeable mountain guide. Check inn at a hotel in town for lunch. In the afternoon you will take a walk to the equator and the mau mau caves for acclimitazion . Return to your hotel for diner and overnight.

Day 2: Nanyuki Town – Marania Campsite

After breakfast you will be driven to the school of adventure, the base of Mt. Kenya trail at 2900m where you will be meet the mountain guide and his team of porters and cook. After introductions you start the hike through a beautiful forest inhabited by a variety of wildlife; lunch en route arriving Marania Campsite 3600m in the afternoon. Diner and overnight at the camp.

Day 3: Marania Campsite – Majors Camp

Depart the camp after breakfast and begin your hike through the moorland covered by high altitude vegetation like Senecio and Lobelia with a lunch break enroute to Major’s Camp (4000m). Diner and overnight at the camp.

Day 4: Majors Camp – Shipton Camp

After breakfast, depart the camp with your packed lunch and start the day’s hike traversing the alpine desert over the col. You experience scenic views of the valleys, Terere and Sendeo peaks. Proceed down to Shiptons Camp 4,200m. at the head of the Mackinders Valley for dinner and overnight with the main peaks, Lenana, Batian and Nelion towering above. Diner and overnight at shipton camp.

Day 5: Acclimatization day at Shipton Camp

After breakfast, you will follow the trail leading to Kami camp below the north face of Batian. Continuing West- Southwest the trails climbs up; switchbacks in the fine snow before reaching Hausberg Col at 4600m. We will descend into the upper Hausberg valley and rest at the oblong and Hausberg tarns and then hike back to Shipton camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Shipton Camp – Point Lenana – Chogoria Bandas

This will be the longest day of the trek. Take an early morning tea and at around 4.30 am and start climbing through Lewis Glacier to point Lenana 4,985m at 6:30am. Point lenana is the third peak. After the sunrise, descend down to Mintos hut where you will have breakfast. Proceed further down along the famous Gorges Valley to Chogoria Bandas; lunch en route arriving in the afternoon for much needed rest, dinner and overnight.

Day 7: Chogoria Bandas – Chogoria Town – Nairobi

After breakfast, depart the bandas at 8.00 am and descend for two hours. Our 4×4 jeep will transfer climbers off the mountain to chogoria town. Drop off the porters and cook. You will be driven back to Nairobi; lunch en route arriving late afternoon. Drop off at your hotel where your expedition ends.
